Is It Legal to Gamble Online in Calgary?
Yes, online gambling is legal in Calgary, as it is regulated under Alberta's provincial gambling laws.
Before the new regulated market opened in July 2026, the only fully provincially regulated online gambling platform was PlayAlberta. However, as of July 2026, the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission (AGLC) can license any online casinos that wish to operate within the province.
Best Local Casinos
Although online gambling is legal in Calgary, residents can also enjoy land-based venues in the city. There are around 8 steady physical casinos in the city, and here are our top picks:
Grey Eagle Resort & Casino

Grey Eagle Resort & Casino is possibly the best-known casino in Calgary, located just southwest of the city centre.
While the location is a bit far from downtown, you can still get here rather quickly. A straight car ride takes approximately 15 minutes, while public transport gets you there in around 45 minutes.
The casino features a massive gaming floor with over 900 slot machines and 30 live tables, plus the resort itself has an indoor pool, hotel facilities, multiple restaurants and an event centre with regular live concerts and shows.
For me, the distance from the city isn't a problem. The game selection is one of the biggest in Calgary, so it's worth the visit, plus I can always take a room and get a little me-time when visiting Grey Eagle.
- Address: 3777 Grey Eagle Dr, Calgary, AB T3E 3X8, Canada
- Phone: (403) 385-3777
Pros:
Hundreds of slot machines (900+)
Full resort experience including accommodation and dining options
Cons:
A slight travel away from the centre
Elbow River Casino

Elbow River Casino is located in the Calgary city centre, just north of the Elbow River and right next to the 17th Avenue bars and nightlife.
With over 600 slots, with stakes ranging from one penny to C$5 and progressive jackpots available, there are plenty of options to choose from.
Additionally, the casino boasts multiple table games and a dedicated poker room for a more traditional approach. Betting fans can enjoy races and place bets at the off-track betting section.
The best part of the Elbow River, in my opinion, is the versatility in games and the location. I can try out my poker skills or relax on race betting, and once I'm done, the city's best bars are just a minute's walk away.
- Address: 218 18 Ave SE, Calgary, AB T2G 1L1, Canada
- Phone: (403) 289-8880
Pros:
Located in the city centre
Multiple gaming options: Slots, poker, table games, race betting, progressive jackpots
Open every day of the week
Cons:
No private lounges or options for high-rollers
Cowboys Casino

Cowboys Casino is another lively downtown venue right in the heart of Calgary, next to East Victoria Park. It's more of a one-stop shop for all entertainment, with the gaming side being smaller when compared to Grey Eagle and Elbow River Casino.
Don't worry, there's still plenty to do here. The casino has over 370 slot machines, 30 table games, a digital gaming pit, a 24-hour poker room and a private high-limit lounge for those who like to play big.
As for other entertainment, Cowboys Casino has a few dining options, but the biggest spotlight goes to the Cowboys dance hall. The dance hall hosts parties that last till the morning hours, so nightlife is right next to the casino games for those interested!
I think of Cowboys Casino as the all-night destination. When I get here, I'm not leaving. I can enjoy slots, food, drinks, and get my late-night dance steps in as well!
- Address: 421 12 Ave SE, Calgary, AB T2G 1A5, Canada
- Phone: (403) 514-0900
Pros:
Casino & dance hall
Prime location in the downtown
24-hour poker room, private lounge
Cons:
Smaller gaming floor compared to other centre casinos
Why Play at Calgary's Online Casinos?
For most Calgary residents, online casinos offer benefits that just aren't available in other forms of gambling, such as at land-based casinos.
In my expert opinion, the biggest advantage of playing at Calgary online casinos is the wider selection of games. Sure, physical casinos can offer up to thousands of options, but so can online casinos - and they can also offer sports betting, bingo, poker, scratch cards, and practically anything since they're not bound by physical limitations. An average online casino holds around 5,000 games to choose from.
Another valid point is accessibility. Even though Calgary has great venues such as the Cowboys Casino right downtown, getting to the casino requires travelling, parking, and a big time commitment. Online casinos, on the other hand, are open 24/7 and can be accessed from anywhere in Calgary.
Pros:
24/7 access
Significantly larger game libraries than anywhere else
Easily accessible on all modern devices
Cons:
No physical casino atmosphere
Lack of sociality in some games
How We Rate Online Casinos Operating in Calgary

We rate online casinos operating in Calgary by carefully reviewing the factors that we think are most important for players.
We aim to provide clear, fair and transparent reviews of online casinos by inspecting each operator from the user's perspective. We've personally tested each site before writing our reviews.
To ensure consistency and accuracy, each operator is reviewed based on a few key categories:
- Deposits and withdrawals: We'll evaluate the deposit and withdrawal speed, number of payment methods, cashier usability and such. Caxino is a great example of a site with fast withdrawals.
- Game offering: We test the games, check which providers are available and how many different game types are featured.
- Customer support: We test all support channels to ensure they work properly, plus see how well the support agents help us.
- Overall usability: We evaluate the overall usability of the site, including factors like loading speed, navigation, menus, etc.
Casino Bonuses
Nearly all online casinos today offer some treats to reward their players, and usually a special package for all new customers. Please note that, due to the provincial legislation, we cannot display any promotions for Albertans.
Free Spins Without A Deposit

Free spins without a deposit are the best bonuses for trying out different games, and simultaneously trying out the operators. These are bonuses that don't require you to make a deposit, although an account or email verification might be required.
As these bonuses don't require a deposit, they often come with strict bonus terms. However, the best casino free spins come with as low a wagering requirement as 1x, but these deals are extremely rare.
No Deposit Bonuses

No deposit bonuses are the most desired bonuses for most gamblers. These include all bonus types that can be activated without making a deposit, meaning they are completely free for the player.
These bonuses can be anything from free spins to straight cash prizes for signing up.
Non Sticky Bonuses

Non sticky bonus means that your deposited funds are separate from the funds you receive from the bonus. This means that before you play with the bonus funds, any winnings you get are withdrawable cash.
Once you place your first wager with bonus money, the winnings are subject to a wagering requirement and other bonus terms. The best non sticky bonus for me has always been one with a 0-5x wagering.
Cashback Bonuses

Cashback bonuses are types of bonuses where the player gets a set percentage of their losses back after a certain period. Let's say there's a 10% daily casino cashback bonus, for example. This would mean if you deposit C$50 and lose it all, you'd get C$5 back at the end of the day.
It's a great way of guaranteeing you get something back when playing at any casino.
Available Games at Calgary's Online Casinos
There are thousands of games available at Calgary's online casinos. Here are just some of the available game types:
New Slots

New slots are constantly being released by multiple providers. All slot sites in Canada feature these latest games, especially the ones from the big providers. You can find them by navigating to the 'New' section of the game lobby. They are often daily or weekly updated with the most recent releases.
You might want to leave your favourites behind and choose a new slot instead, as these games come with new and unique features that might just be the thing for you!
Blackjack

Blackjack is the go-to choice for those who enjoy a slight edge of tactics in their gameplay. It's a game where the players play against the dealer instead of each other.
The best free online blackjack tables provide clear instructions on how to play and what each command means. This way, you can quickly learn the basics and then focus on which tactic you want to choose, or just go with your gut feeling!
Crash Gambling

Crash games are the latest trend in the online gambling industry. They are games where the player places a bet, watches a multiplier rise, and tries to cash out before the game' crashes'.
While there aren't many crash games at online casinos yet, they all usually have at least a few options available. PlayAlberta, on the other hand, doesn't seem to have any crash games in its selection at the time of this review.
Penny Slots

Penny slots are very much what the name implies: games you can play with extra small stakes. These are excellent options for when your bankroll is getting low, or when you just wanna maximize the playing time.
The best 1p slot games don't differ from other slots in any other way than the stake size. They have similar bonus games, and they come in low to high volatilities.
Slingo

Slingo is a combination of the traditional slot games and bingo. PlayAlberta doesn't feature Slingo, so it might sound complicated, but it's actually really simple once you start playing.
The goal is to fill horizontal, vertical and diagonal rows like in bingo, but this time by spinning the slot machine. The best slingo for real money, in my opinion, is one that keeps the maximum win high, but grants out smaller wins as I play.

Responsible Gambling in Calgary
Responsible gambling is taken seriously in Calgary, and it's mainly under the responsibility of Alberta's provincial regulator, Alberta Gaming, Liquor & Cannabis Commission (AGLC). The AGLC enforces rules and standards to promote responsible gambling at all legal online gambling platforms.
A key responsible gambling online program for Calgary residents is GameSense. GameSense is a provincial programme which provides information about safe gambling, budgets, casino games, limits, exclusions and links to where to find support for any concerns.
As for offshore casinos, they all offer responsible gambling tools, ranging from reality checks to full self-exclusions. Most pages also include their own safe gambling sections with loads of helpful information about the matter.
In my personal opinion, every player should always be aware of how much they can afford to lose on gambling. That's why it's best to take advantage of the limits offered at online casinos and set at least a deposit limit to control your spending.
The help channels provided by the Alberta province are also a great addition to the limits offered online, and I would never hesitate to rely on them in case I felt I needed help.
